Costa del Sol Attracts More Visitors Than Before the Pandemic as Tourists Continue to Fall in Love with Southern Spain

According to publicly available statistics, the Costa del Sol region experienced a remarkable increase in both tourism and new residents in 2023. Málaga Airport alone handled a record-breaking 12.2 million international arrivals to Andalusia last year, according to Spain's National Statistics Institute (INE), surpassing the previous record of 12.02 million set in 2019. “This sends a clear message to property investors that southern Spain is now even more popular with tourists than it was before the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Viktor Margita, co-owner of Viva España Real Estate.

If we also include tourists who arrived on the Costa del Sol by means other than air travel, the total increases by nearly another 2 million visitors. Together, tourists spent more than €19.137 billion in the region last year, representing a 12% increase compared to the previous year. Even more impressive are the figures for July and August alone.

“During these two peak summer months, the Costa del Sol welcomed 6 million tourists, generating more than €8 billion in tourism revenue. It clearly demonstrates just how popular this region has become and the tremendous economic strength it offers,” Viktor adds.

This view is shared by Esperanza González, Director of Costa del Sol Tourism: “Costa del Sol is a thriving destination with enormous growth potential, particularly on the international stage.” As reported by Euroweekly, the largest groups of visitors come from the United Kingdom, France, and the Netherlands. The region is also seeing a growing number of visitors from Poland, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the United States.

The Most Popular Locations

Foreign buyers and visitors are especially attracted to the areas west of Málaga. Estepona is currently the second fastest-growing city in Spain, with more than 77,000 registered residents, including nearly 21,000 foreign nationals. Marbella, renowned for its luxurious lifestyle, has also continued to expand. As of January 2024, it had more than 165,000 registered residents representing 152 different nationalities, with Spaniards and British citizens making up the largest groups. Benalmádena has become the fifth fastest-growing municipality in Spain. “It is clear that anyone looking to relocate permanently or spend part of the year in southern Spain primarily chooses places with excellent infrastructure, high-quality services, international schools for their children, and plenty of opportunities for an active lifestyle. These towns meet all of those expectations at an exceptional level. And, of course, the year-round pleasant climate and fresh sea air are an added bonus,” says Viktor. He adds, “For those who prefer a slower pace of life, the eastern side of Málaga offers beautiful and romantic destinations where time seems to move more gently. Tourists visit these areas as well, although they tend to be a different type of traveller. Nerja is certainly worth a visit. According to local legend, wishes come true at its famous viewpoint known as the Balcony of Europe.”
