Health care professionals such as dentists and optician are also highly valued on the Costa del Sol; rescue teams are well equipped and ready for rapid response (emergency phone: 112); and modern pharmacies (mostly with English-speaking staff) are highly represented in the city's main centres and offer a convenient list of 24-hour services. Whether you suffer from a mild illness and need a doctor, have suffered a major accident and need to visit the emergency room, or need round-the-clock treatment and consultation, hospitals in southern Spain are top notch – state or private. Well-trained nurses, doctors and other medical staff have access to modern equipment, making your hospital experience as comfortable, efficient and fast as possible.
STATE HOSPITAL
Marbella Area – the Costa del Sol Hospital, recognised as the world's leading centre for childbirth and childcare by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF, is located next to the main coastal highway A7 (N340) to the immediate exit from the centre of Marbella. A significant proportion of patients are not Spanish speaking and voluntary interpreters are available.
Málaga – In the capital Málaga, the General Hospital is located on Avenida Carlos Haya, the Maternity and Children's Hospital in Avenida Arroyo de los Ángeles and the Regional University Hospital in Málaga on the outskirts of the city near the university campus. If you are struggling with Spanish, we will arrange for an interpreter, to help you with everything in case of a health problem.
PRIVATE CARE
Helicopteros Sanitarios – This is a private emergency service that commits to be available 24/7 for an annual fee. They can respond with one of their helicopters, if the situation requires it, but you will usually encounter a well-equipped ambulance that offers rapid diagnosis, stabilization, and quick transport to the hospital for the most urgent and life-threatening cases.
Benalmádena – Vithas Xanit International Hospital is located in the Arroyo de la Miel (Benalmádena) area and Fuengirola has an associated Xanit clinic. The hospital offers 24-hour emergency service and specializes in modern diagnostic and therapeutic treatment.
PHARMACY
You can find the traditional Spanish pharmacy all over the Costa del Sol. Many of them are open for 24 hours and most of them are brightly neon lit so you can't miss them. They are always well stocked and served by knowledgeable and friendly pharmacists, many of whom will speak quite good English. Medicines that you would normally need a prescription for in other countries may be available at the counter in Spain, although their availability has been tightened in recent years.
